Rann of Kutch-The Unchartered Desert of India
Desert of Rajasthan with its exotic palaces draws most attention from tourists. However, the desert of Kutch locally known as the "Rann of Kutch" also boasts of a rich and diverse cultural heritage. Kutch is a district of the state of Gujarat in western India. Handicraft of the local women of Kutch amongst various other art forms is one of the major contributors for their rich cultural heritage. Being born and brought up in a metropolitan city in India documenting the different tribes of the rural area of Kutch was an eye opening experience for me. As I documented their lifestyle, culture and tradition it made me realize how even a small district has so much beauty hidden in it. Staying with them I was amazed at the warmth and hospitality that I received. This made me realize that these feelings did not correlate with the financial richness of a person but depended solely on the richness of his virtues. Every tribe had a different way of living their own life, not only based on their professions, local art but even their dressing style. In spite of their diversity, a common link between all the tribes was that how they survived the harsh climate conditions of the Rann of Kutch. They had a simple way of living, they complained less, smiled more and appreciated the little things in life that often are taken for granted in the city.
